Nicosia is the only truly divided capital city in the world. It has been divided since 1974, when a Turkish invasion came and split the city. It was really strange walking on the green line (the border between the city) because there were army men patrolling the area with guns. There was barbed wire and the area behind it looked quite run down. There was some nice street art to be seen as we were walking around the area, but overall it felt a bit abandoned. It could be due to the fact that everyone was on holiday.
