We met Pablo because he had a cafe next to our hotel. He was really nice and wanted to inform us about the area. We started our day with a nice breakfast at the hotel and then met up with him so he could show us around. We started by visiting the fishing area. There is no way that Leos and I could've gotten so close to the fishing huts, boats and people if it wasn't for Pablo. It was so interesting to see that the fishermen were using branches from a tree/bush as bait for lobster. Then we learned about the fish mill the Chinese built in the village and how bad it has been for the local fishermen. The Chinese are using nets with really small holes, so they are able to catch EVERYTHING, which is terrible for the ocean. I feel that since the Chinese built a factory so close to the village that they should've built a nice road that would connect the fishing area to the main village. It was hard to hear how bad its been for the locals because of the factory. Things need to change! Next, we walked to a cafe that Pablo's friend is building for the upcoming season. We relaxed there for a bit. Then we went back to his cafe so I could get a fresh coconut and teach him how to make origami. Afterwards we went into the main village area so we could try to get sunscreen, but we weren't able to. However, we were able to get a SIM card for my phone which only cost 10 dalasi. Then I put 50-dalasi credit, but it didn't work the first time around, so I had to add another 50 and it worked. Overall, I paid around $2 for the SIM card and enough credit to make calls and write text messages for our time in Gambia. After finishing our things in the village, we went back to the beach and got to watch a drum circle. We had a simple sandwich for dinner and called it a day. There was a giant crab in front of our room when we got back.
